B+W 4

This is my beginner’s bellydance class. It’s great fun fooling around in a room full of amazing women (who are, at the very least, getting out of the house once a week to try something new), but it’s really scary how many body issues we all have – I don’t want anybody looking at my butt, I don’t want to use my hands to draw the audience’s attention to my face, I’m not dancing in public…. I hope the class allows everyone to challenge these ideas for themselves – I’ve already shifted out of the “there’s no way I’ll ever do this in public” camp, and I’m looking forward to the end of semester presentation night.

If you are wondering, the SPC title is from a song title “dance (you stupid monster to my soft song)” by my friend the chocolate cake in the early 90s?

inspire me thursday – abandon

well, sadly this is where my vision meets my very limited ability to paint.

I haven’t been making art (wow it’s hard to call it “art” – I really wanted to write “stuff”) long enough, and I move so frequently that I don’t have any unfinished objects laying around. So I wanted to work with the prompt instead. What came into my mind is “she took to the skies with wild abandon”. What I picture is a grassy field, with a pile of discarded clothes, and a willowy naked woman wafting above the ground.

This is a quick sketch that’s as close as I can get to the original idea. Not very satisfying – but perhaps something to work toward.

Actaully I just added the wings on the highest figure and I’m happier with it now I suppose.

B+W3

I’m not sure if I’m really happy with this one.

ariel

I just started the ariel scarf for my mum – I love how it’s turning out so far (although I’m not too keen on the chain stitch selvage I added)

inspire me thursday – hearts

I love the idea of worn and damaged hearts – that it’s the bruises and scrapes that make each heart unique and valuable. I also like the contrast between the anatomical heart and the idea of love.

Black & White 2 – circa 1980

This is me during my first year at school – I have no idea why I look so happy.

Having been to Australian public schools I always had to wear uniforms – this one was bottle green and white checks, with a great big white collar and green braid down the front. I credit the uniforms with my continuing inability to dress myself.

black & white 1 – freedom

These are images I probably wouldn’t post if they weren’t black and white. I like the way black and white makes the body’s landscape smooth and interesting.

Edited to add: I’m really loving the feedback on this. It’s great to see the shots through fresh eyes.

inspire me portraits

A couple of self-portraits. I just got my very first copy of photoshop. Sorry if these are a bit amateur.
